The Thrashers won the opening game of the year 7-4. Atlanta scored 3 straigh goals to make it 3-0 early in the 1st period. Semin scored for Washington to make it 3-1. The Thrashers and Caps both exchanged goals and it was 4-2 with Steckel getting a short-handed goal. Then Mike Green scored 2 goals late in the 2nd period to make it 4-4. Going into the 3rd period it looked like the Caps had the momentum, but Atlanta scored 3 goals in the 3rd period to finish the game.
Jose Theodore was pulled after Atlanta's 4th goal. The Caps outshot the Thrashers by 10 shots, but Kari Lehtonen was great tonite. The Caps goalie's looked shaky all-night long, giving up soft goals. Towards the end of the game, it got a little rough. Erskine, Brashear, and Bradley all got into fights.
Here's the stat sheet from tonite's game.

We lost when Ovie didn't bury the penalty shot. I know it's not the "reason," we lost, but when he missed, it just summarized the night. So many chances but little reward. Ovie was frustrated but what we can take out of the game is that Semin and Green stepped up into Ovie's shoes when he stumbled.
VERY disappointing loss.
I kinda agree with that. If Ovie would have made that penalty shot, then chacnes are the Caps win. I thougth Semin or Kozlov should have taken the penalty shot.
Good news is that Semin looked very good, so hopefully he can play like that all year long
It's not the end of the world; it's just the first game. AND we are in good company.
Several top-drawer teams lost their opener. We are not alone.
I'm not going to get all pessimistic over this. It's just one game. We'll turn it around. :)
we should be ok, the Caps just have to come out tonight and prove that yesterdays game was just a hiccup, not a trend.
That was a frustrating game last night. We let the Thrashers score the first 3 goals of the game and the last 3 of the game as well. We can't expect to win like this.
